Downtown San Diego is a thriving commercial and residential community.  Activity can be seen and heard 24 hours per day and seven days a week.  There is, however, one activity that keeps the residents up late at night. Trains blowing their horns as they cross through intersections.

This practice is done as a safety measure and has become an accepted inconvenience for those who live on or near the train tracks.  In fact, some people find the horns soothing as it takes them back to their youth growing up in a mid-western town.  The majority, however, would prefer to experience peace and quiet when they sleep through the night.  The proposed “Quiet Zone” would help to realize this goal.

The Centre City Development Corporation has been working diligently what local, state and federal officials to create a “Quiet Zone” in downtown San Diego’s Marina neighborhood.  It would be located north of the freight yard, from Park Boulevard at the south end to Laurel Street at the north end of downtown.

This proposal would make safety enhancements to thirteen railroad crossings.  With the completion of the safety enhancements, downtown San Diego will qualify for a federal “Quiet Zone” designation where trains do not have to routinely blow their horns through the rail crossings.  Estimated completion date is Summer 2011.  This change could be music to downtown residents’ ears.
